Mary and Alex’s Jule Collins Smith Museum engagement session might be my favorite kind of shoot: two people so comfortable with each other that the camera almost disappears. We started at the museum’s clean, modern architecture and ended in a wide-open field at Rockhouse Farms as the sun dropped low over the trees — and despite a brutally hot Alabama evening, these two never stopped smiling.
Why the Jule Collins Smith Museum
The museum’s grounds are one of my favorite spots for an Auburn engagement session, and it’s easy to see why. The combination of minimalist architecture, manicured hedges, and soft stone textures gives a shoot instant editorial polish — a nice contrast to the wild, organic feel of a place like Rockhouse Farms. Mary and Alex wanted a session that felt like them: put-together but not stiff, romantic but not overly staged. Splitting the evening between these two locations gave us exactly that range.
Two Locations, One Golden Evening
We opened at the museum, where the clean lines of the courtyard let Mary’s pink dress and Alex’s tailored jacket really stand out. From there, we drove just a few minutes to Rockhouse Farms, a beautiful developing property on the edge of Auburn with rolling open fields and long, old oak trees and low light in the evenings. In a word, stunning.
By the time we reached the field, the heat had climbed well into the 90s — and Mary and Alex handled it like absolute champs. No complaints, no fading energy, just two people who kept finding reasons to laugh at each other between shots. Sessions like this are a reminder that connection is what actually makes a photograph, not perfect weather.
Naturals in Front of the Camera
I always tell my couples that my style is about intimacy without intrusion — I’m there to document what’s real, not direct a performance. Mary and Alex made that easy. They walked, talked, and teased each other exactly as they would with no camera around, which is where the best images always come from: a hand finding a waist mid-laugh, a forehead pressed together after a joke only they understood.
A Beautiful Start to Their Story
